What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship consists of a FRAMEWORK of qualifications, The framework includes a Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), a Technical certificate, Functional Skills, Personal Learning and Thinking Skills and Employment Rights and Responsibilities. Each Qualification is recognised in its own right, and together they make up an Apprenticeship qualification.

All Qualifications within the framework meet agreed national standards and are issued by the relevant awarding bodies. The QCF focuses on practical assessment of tasks carried out in the work place. The Technical Certificate focuses on the delivery of the theory required. Functional Skills are designed to ensure that standards of Maths, English and  ICT  are met. Employment Rights and Responsibilities is a task oriented workbook to ensure that all apprentices are familiar with basic employment law and how it applies to them in a work environment.

An Intermediate Apprenticeship, will take up to two years and an Advanced Apprenticeship may take up to 4 years to complete. The time is dependant upon the nature and complexity of the framework chosen, and the industry specific area.

To ensure timely completion a Learning Plan outlining timings for achievement is drawn up at the beginning of the Apprenticeship, and progress throughout the Apprenticeship is constantly monitored.

Apprenticeship funding rules from May 2017

To meet the funding criteria, from April 2017 you will be required to pay the Apprentice a minimum of £3.50 per hour, for at least 30 hours per week, for all 16-18 year olds. When the apprentice reaches the age of 19,  and has completed the first year of their Apprenticeship with you must pay at least the full National Minimum Wage rate. For 18-20 year olds  from April 2017 this will be £5.60 per hour. The Apprentice will need to be released to attend college, and a visit from a Mercia assessor will take place monthly.

All companies with an annual wage bill of £3m or more will now be paying 0.5% towards the Apprentice Levy.  Please contact us to discuss training and payments from your digital account.

SMEs with 50+ employees will be required to pay 10% + VAT of the training costs over the duration of the Apprenticeship.

All companies employing a 16 - 18 year old will receive a phased payment of £1000 per learner

SMEs with less than 50 employees will receive 100% funding for 16/18 year olds and 90% for 19+
