Functional Skills are practical skills in English,Mathematics, and ICT that enable learners to deal with practical problems and challenges. They allow individuals to work confidently, effectively, and independently in everyday life. For example they help you recognise good value when making purchases, write an effective application letter, or use the internet. Functional Skills are a key to success. They open doors to learning, to life and to work. These skills are valued by employers and are a platform on which to build other employability skills. Functional Skills are an essential part of the secondary curriculum and are embedded in the revised programmes of Study for English Mathematics and IT at Key stages 3 and 4. They are a mandatory component of the Diploma, Foundation Learning and Apprenticeships.
For the Apprenticeships that Mercia offer there are three Functional Skills to be considered and you will be assessed on your prior level of school achievement in:
The Functional Skills that you will have to do will depend upon the level of Apprenticeship that you undertake, and the type of industry that you will be working in. You may also have GCSE's which will give you exemptions from the Functional Skills elements of the Apprenticeship.
Mercia Management will work with you to determine the Functional Skills that you will have to complete to achieve your Apprenticeship Framework.
