Work Based Learning – Apprenticeships
Mercia Management Limited offer Apprenticeships in the following cohort areas: Business Administration, Customer Service, Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, Engineering and Electrical Maintenance. Intermediate Apprenticeships are gained at Level 2, and Advanced Apprenticeships are at Level 3. Engineering and Electrical Apprentices normally attend college for one day a week. Apprenticeships for 16-18 year olds are fully funded by the government, Apprenticeships for 19+ learners will require a company contribution.
All Apprenticeships consist of the following elements:
- National Vocational Qualification/Qualifications and Credit Framework at Level 2 or Level 3. A specific number of credits have to be achieved for this element. There are mandatory units, and specific vocational optional units, which each have a credit value. The NVQ/QCF is made up of different units of competence, which are assessed in the workplace, on a one to one basis with a designated Mercia Assessor. During the Apprenticeship period a portfolio of evidence of competence is developed by the Apprentice. A Technical element to all NVQ/QCF is required, and this is now normally integrated into the qualification, but some cohorts require separate testing in this area.
- Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) this is made up of 6 groups of skills - Independent Enquirers, Creative Thinkers, Reflective Learners, Team Workers, Self Managers and Effective Participators, these skills are normally integrated into the Apprenticeship, and recorded alongside of the NVQ/QCF. They test that the Apprentice can apply, acquire and develop a range of life skills. Delivered in the workplace.
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities. This can be either a separate unit of competence or integrated into the Apprenticeship. This tests the Apprentices knowledge of their own and their employers’ rights and responsibilities while at work.
- Functional Skills in English, Maths and ICT are required as part of the Apprenticeship. If a learner has GCSE Grade A-C (obtained within the last 5 years) n these subjects they will be exempt from undertaking Functional Skills. The support sessions for Functional Skills are carried out in small groups at Mercia offices, or on a one to one basis at the Apprentices place of work.
Mercia Management Limited also offer NVQ only qualifications in the above cohorts. These are not government funded, but are charged on a private basis. If you require a quote please contact Mercia offices.
